More Lawsuits Filed Over Bard Avaulta Transvaginal Mesh
Tuesday, June 16th, 2009Another injured woman has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer of a transvaginal surgical mesh product, in this case C.R. Bard, the maker of the Avaulta Anterior and Posterior Biosynthetic Support Systems. The plaintiff, Janice Roush, received the Avaulta transvaginal mesh to treat pelvic organ prolapse, but says that she suffered serious mental and physical pain as a result of complications following the surgery. Roush also suffered permanent injuries and will have to undergo multiple corrective surgeries as a result. She is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. The suit was filed in West Virginia federal court on May 13, 2009 and follows eight other West Virginia lawsuits against Bard for injuries caused by the same product.
In October of 2008, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about transvaginal mesh products, including Avaulta, stating that they had received more than 1,000 reports of complications and side effects including erosion of the vaginal lining, infection, pain, and bladder problems.
